My grandfather's service was truly beautiful, he would have been so honored. His dear friend sang hymns and played guitar. The preacher reminded us how it is far better to depart this life and be with Christ.
Like a ship unmoored and free to set sail, or an ox laying down the yoke of burden and finally resting. Or a soldier departing in victory after a long battle and heading to the home he has ached for. My grandpa is at peace.
His was the first military funeral I have been to and it was so special to have the Honor Guard there. The methodical folding of the flag brought tears to my eyes, and I was close enough to hear him present the flag to my beautiful grandmother and thank her for his faithful service. We even had to smile when they were carrying his casket and a C-130 happened to be flying over.
Being in a small town means there are people that have known me since I was a little girl and places that hold decades of memories. We drove right through the middle of town in our procession and every car pull over as we passed. Well deserved respect for a man who showed kindness to so many.
I love you Grandpa.
